Every email campaign and automation email you send from Occam ends with a link to unsubscribe. Here's what happens when someone uses it, and what to do if they change their mind.
How someone unsubscribes
They select the unsubscribe link in the footer of one of your emails. A page asks them to confirm, and once they select Confirm unsubscribe they see You've been unsubscribed. Opening the link alone doesn't unsubscribe anyone.
Some email apps, such as Gmail, also show their own unsubscribe button next to the sender's name. It does the same thing, without the confirmation page.
Occam doesn't notify you when someone unsubscribes.
What it stops
- Your email campaigns. People who have unsubscribed are skipped when you send, even if they're in the audience.
- Your automation emails.
It applies to your organization only. If the same person also supports another organization that uses Occam, their emails from that organization aren't affected.
What it doesn't stop
- Receipts, event tickets and other emails about something the person did, such as a gift, an order or a sign-up. These still arrive, and the confirmation page tells them so.
- Text messages, which are handled separately.
See who has unsubscribed
Unsubscribing isn't shown on a donor's profile. To list everyone who has, build a segment with the condition Donor: Email opt-in is false.
Opting back in
You can't re-subscribe someone yourself: there's no setting for it on the donor's profile, and importing them again doesn't change it. Giving again doesn't re-subscribe them either.
The person can opt back in themselves, in either of two ways.
In the donor portal. They sign in at your web address followed by /portal/login, such as yourname.occam.gives/portal/login. On the Profile tab, they turn on Email updates and select Save changes. The same switch turns your emails off again.
On your website. They can also opt back in through a Newsletter signup section on your Occam website. When they enter their email address there, your emails are turned back on for them. Send them a link to the page that has the section.
If your website doesn't have one, add the section to a page. See Edit your website. If you don't have an Occam website, you can start one and publish a page with that section.
Good to know
- Everyone in your donor list receives your emails until they unsubscribe. Donors added by hand, by import or by giving all start out subscribed.
- Unsubscribed people still appear in a campaign's Recipients list, marked PENDING, because they were never sent to.
