Start your website

Pick a template and get a branded website in a few minutes.

Who can do this: Owners and admins

Needs: the Website builder tool turned on

A template gives you a complete website to start from: a set of pages, sample text and a look. Pick the one closest to what you need, then make it yours in the editor. Nothing is public until you publish it.

Before you start

  • Only owners and admins can build the website. Staff see Website in the sidebar, but opening it shows a page-not-found message.
  • The Website tool must be turned on. See Turn tools on and off.
  • If you can, set up your brand first. The templates are then shown, and created, in your own colors and fonts.

Pick a template

  1. In the sidebar, go to Website.
  2. Look through the templates. Each card shows a small preview of the home page and lists the pages you'll get.
  3. Select Use this template on the one you want. Occam creates your site and opens the editor.

The templates

Some templates include sections that list your events, volunteer openings or membership tiers. Those fill themselves in from your account. On your live site, a section with nothing to list stays hidden.

Your brand or the template's look

If your brand kit has your colors, fonts or corner style, a switch at the top of the page lets you preview the templates in My brand or in the Template's own look. Whichever is on when you select Use this template is what you get.

With My brand, your site starts in your colors, fonts and corners. Your tagline becomes the home page headline, with your mission under it, and your organization's name and mission (or tagline) are what search results show.

If you haven't set up a brand kit, you'll see Set up my brand instead. You can pick a template now and bring in your brand later: once your brand kit is ready, select Use my brand kit on the editor's Brand & style tab. That changes the colors, fonts and corners, but not the text.

What's next

Your new site's status reads Not published yet — only your team can see it. Replace the sample text and photos (see Edit your website) and set up your pages (see Pages and menu). When you're ready, select Publish website in the toolbar at the top of the editor.

Changing templates later

You can change the colors, fonts, pages and every section of a template, but you can't swap your site to a different template. To use another one, you have to delete your website and start over: on the editor's Settings tab, under Start over, select Delete website.

Delete website removes every page, all your edits and any separate copies you've started. It can't be undone.
