Edit your website

Change text and photos, and add, move and remove sections.

Who can do this: Owners and admins

Needs: the Website builder tool turned on

The website editor shows each page the way visitors will see it, and you make your changes right on the page. Everything saves as you go, and visitors see your changes when you publish.

Before you start

You need a website to edit. If you don't have one yet, see Start your website.

Find your way around

In the sidebar, go to Website. The bar at the top shows which version you're editing and whether visitors can see it, and holds the publish button. If you can't find something, Find a setting lists the common settings and takes you to each one.

Below that bar are five tabs:

  • Pages: the words, pictures and sections on each page. You'll spend most of your time here.
  • Brand & style: your logo, colors, fonts, corners and header.
  • Menu: what's in your navigation, and in what order. See Pages and menu.
  • Settings: search results, the browser tab icon, your own domain and form submissions.
  • Site check: broken links, missing text and other problems to fix.

On the Pages tab, your pages and the current page's Sections are on the left, the page itself is in the middle, and the settings for the section you've selected are on the right. Clicking your logo or name at the top of the page opens Brand & style.

Change text and photos

Click any headline, heading or short piece of text on the page and edit it there. In a one-line field, such as a headline, press Enter when you're done.

Longer text, buttons and links are edited on the right. Select a section by clicking an empty part of it, or its name in the Sections list, then change its fields there. In the Body of a Text section or Image + text section, and in FAQ answers and Text columns, you can format text:

  • **bold** and _italic_
  • [link text](https://example.org) for a link
  • Start lines with - for a bulleted list, or 1. for a numbered one
  • Start a line with ## or ### for a heading
  • Leave a blank line between paragraphs

For an image, select Upload and choose a JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF under 4 MB, or paste the web address of an image that's already online. Then fill in Image description (alt text) so screen readers can describe it. Leave it blank only for purely decorative images.

Add, move and remove sections

  • Add: hover between two sections and select Add section, or use the Add section button at the bottom of the page. Pick a type, and it's added with sample content for you to replace.
  • Move: drag the handle in the section's top-right toolbar, or drag the section in the Sections list on the left.
  • Duplicate: the copy button in the section's toolbar adds a copy directly below it.
  • Delete: the trash button on the section, in the Sections list, or at the top of the panel on the right.

A section is deleted as soon as you select the trash button. There's no confirmation and no undo.

Kinds of sections

  • Content: Hero, Text section, Image + text, Impact stats, Cards grid, Call to action, Photo gallery, Team / people, FAQ, Testimonial, Video, Logos / partners, Map & hours, Divider / spacer and Text columns.

  • Live from your account: Donation form, Featured campaign, Upcoming events, Auctions, Events calendar, Shop products, Volunteer openings and Membership tiers. These keep themselves up to date. In the editor they show a placeholder, and your real items appear on the published site. A section that lists things, such as Upcoming events, stays hidden on your site when there's nothing to list, including when that tool is turned off.

When you add a Donation form section, set its Display to Button linking to donation page, so donors finish their gift on your donation page.

  • Forms: Newsletter signup and Contact form. To read entries, go to the Settings tab and select View submissions. Newsletter sign-ups are also added to your donors as people who agreed to get your email.

Preview on phones and tablets

The three device buttons above the page, at the right, show it at desktop, tablet and phone widths. Select one to check how your page fits a smaller screen.

Saving and publishing

Your changes save automatically a moment after you stop. Above the page you'll see Saving… and then Saved. If it says Save failed, your last change didn't save: check your internet connection and make the change again. Wait for Saved before you close the tab.

Saving doesn't put changes live. Once your site is published, the status reads Live — you have changes visitors can't see yet until you select Publish changes.

Good to know

  • Brand & style changes save themselves too. The Menu and Settings tabs have their own Save menu and Save settings buttons.
  • A page can hold up to 60 sections.
