US law (the CAN-SPAM Act) requires every marketing email to include the sender's physical postal address. Occam adds a footer with your address to every email campaign and automation email you send, so you only have to enter it once. Until you've entered it, Occam won't send either kind.
Add your address
- In the sidebar, go to Settings.
- Find the Mailing Address card and type your address in Postal address, on as many lines as you like.
- Select Save Address.
A street address or a registered P.O. box both qualify. The address can be up to 300 characters.
Once you've saved an address you can change it at any time, but you can't remove it: saving an empty box shows The mailing address can be changed but not removed.
Saving it also ticks off Add your mailing address on your getting-started checklist.
What the footer says
Occam adds this to the bottom of each email, after your message:
- "You are receiving this because you are a donor or contact of" your organization's name.
- Your organization's name and address, on one line, with commas in place of line breaks.
- A link to unsubscribe. See Unsubscribes.
You can't change the footer's wording or remove it. It goes on email campaigns and automation emails only. Receipts, tickets and other emails about something a supporter did don't carry it.
If you haven't added it yet
Occam holds your marketing email until you do:
- Email campaigns. You can write and save drafts, but Send Now is greyed out. Nothing is lost: add the address, go back to the draft, and send it.
- Automations that send an email. Saving one, or selecting Activate on a paused one, shows Add your organization's postal address in Settings before turning on a rule that sends email. Automations that only create a task work as usual.
- An automation that was already on. It stays listed as Active and still creates its tasks, but its emails aren't sent, and the ones it skips aren't sent later. Add the address to start them again.
While it's missing, the Email Campaigns and Automations pages show a warning that starts Campaign and automation emails won't send until you add your organization's postal address, with a link to Add it in Settings.
Receipts, tickets and sign-in links don't need the address and are never held.
Good to know
- The footer is added when an email is sent, so a change to your address applies to everything sent after you save it, including drafts you saved earlier.
- The name in the footer is your organization's name as it's set in Occam.
