The donor portal

What donors see in their giving portal, how they sign in, and how to set the greeting that welcomes them.

The donor portal is a private page on your web address where a supporter sees what they've done with you: their gifts, monthly giving, tickets, memberships, pledges, volunteer shifts and store orders. Any donor can use it, as long as the email address on their record is one they receive mail at. There's nothing to turn on.

How donors sign in

The portal doesn't use passwords. A donor asks for a sign-in link, and opening it signs them in.

  1. They go to your web address followed by /portal/login, such as yourname.occam.gives/portal/login. The Log in link on your public page opens the same page.
  2. They enter their email address and select Send sign-in link.
  3. They open the email, whose subject starts "Your sign-in link for", and select Access my giving portal.

The address has to be the one on their donor record. That's the address their receipts go to.

  • The link works for 1 hour, and only once.
  • They can open the email on any device. They're signed in on the device and browser where they open the link.
  • They stay signed in on that browser for 30 days. After that, they ask for a new link.

To sign out, they select the sign-out icon in the top right corner of the portal. That signs them out on every device, not only the one they're using. It also switches off the Manage your recurring donation links in receipts they've already received. Their next receipt has a new one.

If a donor can't get in, see "I can't sign in to the portal".

What donors see

The portal shows your logo, your organization's name and your main color from your brand kit. It has four tabs.

Anything to do with memberships, events, volunteering, pledges, the store, peer-to-peer fundraising or auctions only appears while that tool is turned on. See Turn tools on and off.

Home

Home opens with a greeting and the donor's first name, the total they've given and how many gifts they've made. Below that, each section appears only when the donor has something in it:

  • Your membership: their active memberships. See Renewals and expiry.
  • Your monthly giving: each monthly gift billed by Stripe, with its amount and a Cancel button. A gift whose last payment didn't go through is marked "payment failed".
  • Coming up on your pledge: active pledges that still have a payment due, with how much has been paid so far.
  • You're going: tickets for events that are still ahead, each with its QR code for check-in.
  • You're on the schedule: upcoming volunteer shifts, each with a Cancel button until the volunteer is checked in.
  • On its way to you: store orders you haven't marked fulfilled yet.
  • Your fundraiser: their peer-to-peer fundraising page, with how much it has raised and a View & share link.
  • Ways to pitch in: up to three things they could do next.

A donor with no gifts and no active membership sees This is where your giving will show up. and a link to your public page.

History

History lists the donor's gifts by calendar year, with a total for each year. A gift appears once its payment has gone through. A gift that was partly refunded shows the refunded amount.

It also lists their pledges with every installment, past events they had tickets for, past volunteer shifts with the hours logged, store orders that have been fulfilled, and memberships that are no longer active.

Help

This tab isn't a support page. It's headed Ways to pitch in, and it suggests things the donor could do next: volunteer shifts with open spots that they haven't signed up for, upcoming events they don't have a ticket to, your active donation campaigns and your open auctions. It shows up to three of each kind and six in total.

Donors with a question still need to contact you.

Profile

Profile is headed Your details. The donor can change their First name, Last name and Phone (optional), and turn Email updates and Text messages on or off. Nothing is saved until they select Save changes.

Email updates is the same setting as unsubscribing. Turning it off stops your email campaigns and automation emails, and turning it on starts them again. See Unsubscribes.

What donors can't do in the portal

  • Change the card or the amount of a monthly gift. They can only cancel it. See "Cancel or change my monthly gift".
  • Change their email address. The portal shows it but doesn't let them edit it. Change it for them on their profile. See Add and edit donors.
  • Get a copy of a receipt or a year-end statement. The portal lists gifts, but it doesn't hold receipts. See "Where's my receipt?".
  • Pay a pledge installment. Pledges are shown, with no way to pay from the portal.

Set the welcome greeting

When a donor opens the portal, a full-screen greeting shows your logo, a short phrase and their first name. It appears once per visit and fades on its own after a couple of seconds. A tap, a click or any key skips it. The greeting is on unless you turn it off.

Only owners and admins can change it.

  1. In the sidebar, go to Settings.
  2. Find the Donor Portal Welcome card.
  3. Use the switch at the top of the card to turn the greeting on or off. While it's on, the card shows a preview, using the name Sam, and these settings:
    • Greeting phrases: the words before the donor's name. Type one per line and Occam rotates through them. Leave the box blank to use the built-in mix, such as "Welcome back", "Good to see you" and "Good morning". You can have up to 12 phrases, each 60 characters or fewer.
    • Sign-off line: an optional line under the donor's name, up to 160 characters. For example, "Thanks for standing with us."
    • Background: the color that fills the screen. It starts as your main color. After you pick another, Use brand color takes you back. The text turns black or white by itself so it stays readable.
    • Animation: how much the greeting moves. Choose None, Subtle, Playful or Dramatic. It starts on Playful.
  4. Select Save Welcome. The button shows Saved ✓.

If you see Couldn't save. Please try again., check that you have no more than 12 phrases and that none is longer than 60 characters.

Turning the greeting off removes the full-screen hello only. The Home tab still opens with a greeting phrase and the donor's first name.

Good to know

  • The portal shows one donor record. If a donor has given under two email addresses, they have two records, and each address opens only its own history.
  • Monthly gifts you recorded by hand, such as a monthly check, aren't listed under Your monthly giving.
  • If a donor's record has no first name, the greeting calls them "friend".
  • With Animation set to None, the greeting still appears. It fades in and out without moving.
  • You can't see in Occam whether a donor has signed in to the portal.
