Pages and menu

Add, rename and reorder pages, and choose what's in your menu.

Who can do this: Owners and admins

Needs: the Website builder tool turned on

Your website's pages are listed on the left of the editor's Pages tab, where you add, rename, reorder and remove them. The Menu tab decides which links appear in the navigation at the top of every page. Like your other edits, these changes reach visitors when you publish.

Add a page

  1. In the sidebar, go to Website.
  2. On the Pages tab, type a name in the New page name box below your list of pages.
  3. Press Enter, or select the plus button next to the box.

The new page opens empty. Select Add your first section to start filling it in. See Edit your website.

Change a page's settings

Select the gear button next to a page to open its settings:

  • Page name: what the page is called in the editor and, unless you've customized your menu, in the menu. It saves when you click out of the box.
  • URL slug: the end of the page's web address, such as about. Occam changes it to lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, and adds a number, such as about-2, if another page already uses it. The page list keeps showing what you typed until you reload the editor. The home page has no slug.
  • Page enabled: turn it off to take a page off your site, and out of the menu, without deleting it. The list marks it disabled.
  • Set as home: makes this page your home page, at your site's main address.
  • Delete: removes the page and its sections after you confirm. You can't delete your only page. If you delete the home page, the first page in the list becomes the home page.

Changing a slug changes the page's address. Menu links follow the change, but any other link to the old address stops working, including buttons on your own pages. Update those by hand.

Reorder pages

Drag a page up or down the list by its handle. If your menu is automatic, the menu follows this order.

Choose what's in your menu

To start with, your menu is automatic: it lists every enabled page, in the order of your page list. To change it:

  1. Go to the Menu tab and select Customize menu. Your menu fills with a link to each enabled page.
  2. Add items with the buttons below the list:
    • Page link: choose one of your pages. Leave Label (optional) blank to use the page's name.
    • Custom link: a label and a web address, such as your donation page or another website.
    • Dropdown group: a label, such as "About", with page links and custom links under it. Add them with the group's own Page and Link buttons.
  3. Use the arrows to move items, and the trash button to remove one.
  4. Select Save menu.

When you save, Occam drops any unfinished item: a page link with no page chosen, a custom link without both a label and an address, or a dropdown group with no label or no links.

Good to know

  • A custom menu doesn't update itself. Add new pages to it yourself. Site check warns about any enabled page that isn't in your menu.
  • Disabled pages are left out of your live menu, even if your custom menu links to them.
  • Reset to automatic switches the tab back to the automatic view, but it doesn't save that change: when you come back to the Menu tab, your custom menu is still there, and your site keeps using it. To bring a custom menu back in line with your pages, select Reset to automatic, then Customize menu, then Save menu.
  • Your template's home page has no slug. If you make a different page the home page, visitors can't reach the old one until you give it a URL slug. Delete it instead if you don't need it.
