"Cancel or change my monthly gift"

Donors cancel a monthly gift themselves, from a link in their receipts or in the donor portal. You can also cancel it for them in Stripe. Nobody can edit a monthly gift, so changing the amount means starting a new one.

Cancel a monthly gift

Tell the donor:

1. Open your most recent monthly receipt. Its subject starts "Donation receipt from".
2. Select Manage your recurring donation.
3. Select Cancel next to the gift, and confirm.

Charges stop straight away, and the gift disappears from their list. Their past gifts stay on their record. Occam doesn't send an email confirming the cancellation, so you may want to confirm it yourself.

The link works for 14 days after the receipt was sent. It also stops working if the donor signs out of the donor portal after the receipt was sent. A link that no longer works opens the portal's sign-in page with That link has expired. Please request a new one. The donor can sign in there and cancel from the portal, or you can cancel the gift for them in Stripe.

Cancel from the donor portal

The donor doesn't need a receipt for this. Send them the address of your portal's sign-in page: your web address followed by /portal/login, such as yourname.occam.gives/portal/login. Then tell the donor:

1. Enter the email address your receipts go to and select Send sign-in link.
2. Open the email and select Access my giving portal. The link works for 1 hour.
3. On the Home tab, find Your monthly giving. Select Cancel next to the gift, and confirm.

Charges stop straight away, and the gift disappears from Your monthly giving. As with the receipt link, Occam doesn't send an email confirming it.

Cancel it for them in Stripe

You can't cancel a monthly gift from the donor's profile in Occam. Do it in your Stripe dashboard:

1. Search for the donor's email address and open their subscription. It's named after the campaign.
2. Cancel the subscription, and choose to cancel it immediately.

Occam picks up the cancellation, and the donor's Recurring Gifts card shows the gift as ended. If you schedule the cancellation for the end of the billing period instead, Occam shows the gift as active until then.

Change the amount

The donor cancels their current monthly gift, then starts a new one at the new amount on the campaign's donation page, with Make this monthly ticked.

Update the card

Donors can't change the card on a monthly gift. To use a new card, they cancel and start a new monthly gift with it.

Good to know

• If the donor was charged after they meant to cancel, an owner or admin can refund that charge. Refunding it doesn't cancel the gift. See Refund a payment.
