A promo code takes a percentage off the ticket price for anyone who enters it. Each event can have one code. Use it for members, sponsors' guests, early buyers, or anyone else you want to give a discount to.
Before you start
- The event has to exist already. You add a code on the event's edit page, not when you create it. See Create an event.
- Promo codes only apply to paid events. A free event has nothing to discount.
Add a promo code
- In the sidebar, go to Events and select Edit on the event's card.
- In Promo Code (optional), enter the code, such as SAVE20.
- In Discount %, enter a number from 1 to 100.
- Select Save Changes.
The code works straight away. Fill in both boxes: a code with no discount isn't offered to buyers.
What buyers see
Once an event has a code, its ticket form shows a Promo code (optional) box. The code itself isn't shown anywhere on the page, so share it with the people it's for.
- The buyer types the code and selects Apply.
- The form shows the discount, for example 20% discount applied!, and the purchase button shows the new total.
- They carry on as usual. Stripe's checkout page charges the discounted price.
The discount comes off every ticket in the order. Capital letters don't matter, so SAVE20 and save20 both work.
If the code is wrong, the form says That promo code isn't valid for this event. A buyer who leaves a wrong code in the box can't finish the purchase until they correct it or clear the box. That way nobody pays full price thinking they got a discount.
A 100% code
A code with a discount of 100 makes tickets free for the people who have it. Their button changes to Register Free, there's no payment step, and they get their ticket email straight away. This is a simple way to give complimentary tickets to speakers, sponsors or volunteers while everyone else pays.
Change or remove a code
On the event's edit page, change either box and select Save Changes. The old code stops working at once. To remove the code, clear Promo Code (optional) and save.
Orders already placed keep the price they paid.
Good to know
- There's one code per event, and it's always a percentage. You can't set a dollar amount off.
- A code has no limit on how many times it's used and no end date. Anyone who has it can use it until you change or remove it, so change it if it spreads further than you meant.
- Discounted tickets count toward Capacity like any others.
- Each ticket's recorded amount is what the buyer actually paid.
