Occam takes payments through Stripe, using your organization's own Stripe account. Every donation, ticket, store order and auction win is paid into that account, and from there to your bank. Until Stripe is connected, nobody can pay you online.
Before you start
- You need a Stripe account, or you can create one during these steps. Stripe will ask for your organization's legal name, EIN and bank account, so have them ready.
- Only owners and admins can connect Stripe.
Connect your account
- In the sidebar, go to Settings.
- Find the Stripe Payments card and select Connect with Stripe.
- Stripe opens. Sign in to your Stripe account, or create one, and approve the connection.
- Stripe sends you back to Settings, where you'll see Stripe account connected successfully and the card shows Connected.
The Accept donations item on your getting-started checklist ticks itself off once you're connected.
If something goes wrong
If you come back to Settings with a message that starts Stripe connection failed, nothing was connected. Select Connect with Stripe again, and finish the whole connection in the same browser you started it in. Starting in one browser and finishing in another is the most common cause.
If the card says Pending verification, select Continue Stripe Setup and finish the steps Stripe asks for.
What doesn't work until you connect
- Donation pages, ticket sales for paid events and your online store show the error This organization has not connected a Stripe account yet when someone tries to pay.
- Auctions can't charge their winners.
- The point-of-sale screen can still take cash and checks, but not cards.
Free events don't need Stripe. People can register for them as soon as the event is live.
Disconnecting
Disconnect Stripe on the same card stops all online payments straight away: donations, tickets, store orders and auction charges. Your Stripe account and the money already in it aren't affected, and you can connect again at any time.
If you have monthly donors, email info@occam.gives before you disconnect, so we can make sure nothing in their giving is lost.
Good to know
- Occam doesn't hold your money. Payouts to your bank, Stripe's fees and any disputes are all handled in your Stripe dashboard. See Payouts, fees and disputes.
- The card shows your Stripe account ID (it starts with
acct_). Stripe support will ask for it if you contact them.
