Payouts, fees and disputes

Where your money goes, what it costs, and where to handle payouts and disputes.

Occam doesn't hold your money. Every donation, ticket, membership, store order and auction payment goes straight into your organization's own Stripe account, and Stripe pays it out to your bank.

Before you start

You need Stripe connected. See Connect Stripe.

Payouts to your bank

Stripe sends your money to your bank, not Occam. Your Stripe dashboard is where you:

  • see each payout and when it reaches your bank
  • change your payout schedule
  • change the bank account Stripe pays into

Occam doesn't show payouts.

What it costs

  • Stripe's processing fees. Stripe charges a fee on each payment and keeps it before paying you. You can see the fee on each payment in your Stripe dashboard. Registered charities can ask Stripe for a lower rate. See Lower your payment fees.
  • Occam's pricing. Contact us at info@occam.gives.

Occam shows what each person paid, before Stripe's fees. So the totals in Occam will be higher than the deposits in your bank. See Why numbers differ.

Letting donors cover the fee

Your donation form has a Cover processing fee checkbox. When a donor ticks it, Occam adds an estimate of the fee to their gift, at Stripe's standard rate of 2.9% + 30¢ of everything charged, including the amount added to cover it. So on a $100 gift Occam adds $3.30 and they pay $103.30. That leaves you with the full $100. Donors paying with PayPal or Venmo see the estimate at PayPal's standard rate, 3.49% + 49¢.

  • It's an estimate. Stripe's actual fee on that payment can be different. If you're on a nonprofit rate, the fee is lower and you keep the difference. See Lower your payment fees.
  • The extra is part of the gift. Occam records the total, and the donor's receipt shows the total.
  • On a monthly gift, it's added to every monthly charge.

Disputes and chargebacks

When someone disputes a charge with their bank, Stripe handles it, and you respond from your Stripe dashboard. Stripe tells you what evidence it needs and the deadline.

Occam keeps its records in step with the dispute:

  • While it's open, the payment is left out of your totals.
  • If you win, the payment counts again.
  • If you lose, Occam treats the payment as refunded.

Good to know

  • Refunds work in both places. You can refund from Occam or from your Stripe dashboard. See Refund a payment.
  • Stripe support will ask for your Stripe account ID. It's on the Stripe Payments card in Settings and starts with acct_.
